BIRDING AND NATURE  |
Hill Country Nature Center & Adventure Tours; where you can experience the outdoors Year Round by Guided Driving,Walking, Hiking or Kayak Tours. Your Adventure can take place in State Parks, on different Ranches & Private properties not open to the general public. Our area has the crystal clear Frio, Sabinal & Nueces Rivers and miles of beautiful rugged Hill Country. Have your camera and binoculars ready for our guided Nature Tours. Where you can catch a glimpse of some of the many wonderful birds & butterfly found in our area. Plus White-tail & Axis deer, lizards & many other critters. In nature you never know what’s waiting around the next bush! Let us know if you are interested in seeing some ‘Champion Big Trees’; or our ‘Bluebird Trail’ ofnestboxes with nests, eggs or baby birds from March thru June. We also offer an Entertaining & Educational Natural History Tour. Where you can learn about Geology of the Edwards Plateau, History of Native Peoples, Medicinal & Edible Plants, Wildflowers, Grasses, Birds, Butterflies, Insects, Animals & Reptiles. Nature / Birding / Bluebird Trail Tours (on our Ranch)
2 to 4 hours - $22.00 per person
This Tour with a $88.00 Minimum- on Dates Not Already Scheduled
$17.00 per person for Groups of 10 or more
On our Birding/Nature / Bluebird Trail Tour you can experience the outdoors on a Guided Walking Tour, Birding by Chair, or from our open 6 passenger touring golf cart. Your Adventure takes place on our 250 acre Ranch with hills & valleys. On our ‘Bluebird Trail’ of 30 nestboxes & 6 viewing stations with benches you will see small cavity nesters. Including; Eastern Bluebirds, Black-crested Titmouse, Bewick’s Wren, Ash-throated Flycatcher, & Carolina Chickadee with nests, eggs or baby birds. You will peek into nestboxes, & learn how to tell differences in nests, eggs & fledgling species.
Along our Nature Trails you will also see some of the 122 species of birds seen here; Which includes our resident White-tailed Kite pair, Long-billed Thrasher, Vesper Sparrow, Pine Siskin, Lesser Goldfinch, Purple Martin, Barn Swallow, Yellow-throated Warbler, Ladder-backed & Golden-fronted Woodpecker, Field Sparrow, Lincoln Sparrow, White-crowned Sparrow, Inca Dove, White-winged Dove, Mourning Dove, Red-tailed & Red-shouldered Hawks, Kestrel, Raven, Red-winged Blackbird, Yellowheaded Blackbird, Brown-headed Cowbird, White-eyed Vireo, Zoned-tailed Hawk, Blue Grosbeak, Lazuli Bunting, Bushtit, Black-chinned, Ruby-throated & Rufous hummingbirds, Western Kingbird, Golden-cheeked Warblers, a Rare sighting of a Cassin’s Vireo or maybe a Vermilion Flycatcher Pair with nest, eggs, or young.
Have your camera & binoculars ready as you could catch a glimpse of many wonderful Specialty Birds & Butterfly found in our area. Plus White-tail, Axis deer, lizards & many other critters. In nature you never know what’s waiting around the next bush! Touring by Golf Cart Available for Handicap folks too.

From Hwy 83 & FM 1050 intersection; East on to FM 1050 which goes to Garner State Park & Utopia, go 5 miles on FM 1050, Don’t go past Blanket Creek sign on right, our signs are on left at our entrance – Rio Frio Lodging & Hill Country Nature Center. Park in parking area behind our Cedar Office & Meet on Porch.
From Utopia & 187; south end of Utopia, go west on FM 1050 toward Garner Park, go 10 miles, past Blanket Creek it’s the 3rd entrance on the right, our signs say Rio Frio Lodging & Hill Country Nature Center. Park in parking area behind our Cedar Office & Meet on Porch.

It will take about 5 min. from Garner State Park, 15 min. from Neal’s Store in Concan,
15 min. from Utopia, 15 min. from Leakey, 40 min. from Uvalde.

*Your Guide will meet you in the Office or on the porch. If you have room in your car he/ or she can ride with you. This cuts down on our liability & we can talk to you along the way & point out birds or interesting sites.
